I've had neither time not inclination to read much this weekend, so I had a Vintage mini in my bag; Friendship by Rose Tremain. This one has excerpts from "Restoration" and "The Gustav Sonata". Of those two "Restoration" seems more my thing as I like historical fiction, but I enjoyed both and it was nice to get a taste of Tremain's style. And it made me get out pen and paper as I like writing letters to stay in touch with friends that live far away although I'm getting around to the idea to calling people as it is nice to hear a friends voice from time to time, reassuring. How do you stay in touch with friends? Speaking of voices, I'm still obssesed with the podcast "You must remember this"; making my way through the episodes about "Dead Blondes". #rosetremain #vintageminis #amreading #friendship #correspondence #stationery #bookstagram #readstagram #podcasts#restoration #vintagebooks #thegustavsonata #coffeegram
This morning I probably need three cups of coffee and a spritz of a very fresh perfume (Un jardin sur le Nil to be exact) to get going, as I stayed up late (too late) to finish "The Stone Sky" by N.K Jemisin. It has been an amazing world to immerse myself in and learn about, a wonderful gallery of characters to get to know and great reading experience as I have shared my thoughts on this with @lifeinacoldclimate and @bibliobimbo throughout the reading. This is some of the best fantasy I have read; I'm impressed by the world building and the writing for sure, deserving of all the awards and accolades. (The reasons I'm not absolutly loving it are all about taste and mood). #thestonesky #nkjemisin #unjardinsurlenil #hermes#bookstagram #svenskttenn #readstagram #amreading
About last night....Cocktails with rhubarb were served and the talk was; is Spring finally here?(probably but don't put away the wintercoat yet), The language of flowers (rhubarb means advice apparently), Gardner's nightcap by Muriel Stuart (that inspired me to create a cocktail), if it is possible to grow rhubarb on the balcony (probably but is it worth it?) and what herbs to plant for this summer's cocktails (variations on thyme were suggested). I took a few notes (and a photo); blog post is up now with a few things related to rhubarb and cocktails. In short; a rhubarb tastes like spring and will keep the spirits up if the weather fails. Enjoy! #latergram #bookstagram #gardenersnightcap#murielstuart #persephonebooks #thelanguageofflowers #everymanslibrarypocketpoets #thedrunkenbotanist #amystewart #cocktailhour #tasteslikespring #rhubarb #rabarber
I've returned to reading but the book in question is the third and final installment in a trilogy, so I might just feel less than excited in a few days time. The advice I always give to others is to only read books they are excited about starting when the love of reading wanes. So I followed my own advice, looked at my overflowing pile of unread books and my shelves (I'm a notorious rereader) and came up with seven titles that really has me going on all cylinders right now. The full list is on the blog (and it's a wild mix of things) but two of them are "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke and "Radiance" by Catherynne M. Valente. Scrambling to photograph this I found "Letters to Felice" by Kafka that had fallen behind the chair; it was not on the list as I have been looking for it but now that I do it is very likely I'm reading it very soon. Which books are you excited about right now? Also:bought a gingko tree. I love gingko trees. They are like sculptures. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #stackofbooks #jonathanstrangeandmrnorrell #susannaclarke #radiance#catherynnemvalente #kafka#gingko #readstagram #readersofinstagram #readingisfundamental #bookporn #culturetripbooks #igreads
When asked to take part in the #vintageminislifestories booktour I didn't do exactly as told. I ended up choosing jealousy by Marcel Proust, Home by Salman Rushdie and Eating by Nigella Lawson. I didn't chose jealousy because I am a jealous person, far from it. I try to always be happy for others (and do fairly well in that). I chose it because it was Proust. If there is a Proust-option I will go with that, always. The only thing I might be jealous of is people who have the reading of "In search of lost time" yet to come. It is one of the best reading experiences of my life, it was transformative. There are people that claim that Proust should be read late in life "to understand" but I say no no to that. Read it now, read it whenever. It is suitable for all ages. I'm a gonna let you finish but Marcel Proust was probably the sharpest observer of human nature of all time. Eating and Home though. Those are topics close to my heart. Most my pics are taken with my livingroom table as a background (long live the flatlay!). And if the living room is a calm spot for books and reading the kitchen is the heart of the home. If I didn't eat I would die to begin with. Furthermore, scents and taste are so associated with memory and feeling. A meal can transport you to another time and place just as books can. Those are my three, hope those choices make sense. Tune in tomorrow to see which titles @booksugar has chosen! #vintageminislifestories #marcelproust #salmanrushdie #nigellalawson #vintageminis #bookstagram #readingisfundamental #alwaysreading #culturetripbooks #scentedcandles #booksandbeans #bookflatlay #bookphotography #bookstagrammer #readstagram #readersofinstagram #vscobooks
I got up early, had tea and toast while reading the FT (I recommend Mary Kaldor's comments about Syria, the essay about facism and the long piece about Big Sugar). Second breakfast is coffee, a croissant and reading some Plath before dealing with all the Sunday chores. I'm still not able to focus on anything longer than a few pages so reading poetry little by little instead (I'm also obsessively listening to the podcast "you must remember this"). "Colossus" is brilliant by the way, but you probably knew that already. #sylviaplath #colossus #faberbooks #faberandfaber #slowliving #thatsdarling #livethelittlethings #bookhangover#weliveinfinancialtimes #bookstagram #booksandcoffee #bookstagrammer #culturetripbooks #currentlyreading #amreading #poetry #alwaysreading #readersofinstagram #readstagram #readingisfundamental #gustavsberg #sundaymood #secondbreakfast
